An American classic, West Side Story is the story of Romeo and Juliet--transported to Manhattan of the 1950's. The young lovers are Tony and Maria. The only thing keeping them apart is Tony is a member of a gang (the Jets) whose members have sworn to take down their Puerto Rican rivals (the Sharks), of which Maria's older brother Bernardo is the leader. Tragedy ensues for all when the boys in the gang realize their rivalry has gone too far.... Based on the book by Arthur Laurents, Jerome Robbins' original direction and Tony Award-winning choreography will be reproduced for this new production of West Side Story. With music written and composed by Leonard Bernstein and lyricist Stephen Sondheim, West Side Story features some of Broadway's most beloved music including, "Somewhere," "One Hand, One Heart," "Tonight," "America" and "Maria." |
