| THE NERD |
|
"The Nerd," by Larry Shue, was first presented by the Milwaukee Reperetory Theater in 1981. Willum Cubbert, an aspiring architect, has often told Axel, his sarcastic and loyal friend, and Tansy, a would-be flame, about the debt he owes to Rick Steadman, a fellow GI who saved Willum's life in Viet Nam. Never having laid eyes upon his "savior," Willum wrote him a letter stating that "...as long as you are alive, you will have somebody on earth who will do anything for you." What a surprise when Rick shows up unexpectedly at Willum's 34th birthday party, also attended by Warnock Waldgrave, an overbearing business associate, his mousy wife, Clelia, and daughter, Thora, the nightmare child. Willum;s delight soon fades as it becomes clear that Rick is a hopeless "nerd"...a bumbling child-man with no social skills, little intelligence, and zero tact. And Rick stays on and on, creating one chaotic situation after another, until the normally cool and calm Willum finds himself contemplating violence. This unparalleled evening of entertainment ends with a "twist," so be prepared! |
